FORS launches new ‘safe driving’ course
The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) has introduced a new 'safe driving' course, replacing both the safe urban driving (SUD) and van smart courses. This revamped course, available through the FORS Professional training portfolio, caters to drivers of all vehicle classes, from vans to 44-tonne GCW articulated vehicles. The comprehensive redesign ensures that participants receive the latest instruction on defensive driving, fostering a safety-oriented mindset that benefits drivers, vulnerable road users, and the broader public, according to FORS.
The course covers drivers' regulatory responsibilities and emphasizes safe driving practices on motorways, rural, and urban roads. It delves into crucial areas affecting drivers, including driver fitness, health, distraction, and impairment. Additionally, the course includes both a practical on-cycle session and a theory module. Both three-and-a-half-hour modules contribute to the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) and fulfill mandatory Work-Related Road Risk training requirements for FORS Silver.
Geraint Davies, FORS concession director, highlighted the benefits of the new course, bringing together elements from the previous SUD and van smart training courses. While the FORS safe driving course is currently available through all FORS Professional licensed training providers, there is a transition period allowing the continued availability of the previous SUD course to accommodate Driver CPC approvals. Previous courses, such as SUD and van smart, remain valid demonstrations of meeting FORS Silver training requirements within the five-year validity period. Since its launch in 2012, the SUD course has successfully provided training for over 130,000 drivers.
